A solid concrete ceiling is the ideal substrate for a hanging chair. Concrete typically supports over 500 kg at any point without problems – the load-bearing capacity is therefore not a bottleneck. The crucial factor is solely the correct selection and installation of the heavy-duty anchor.

🔧 Step-by-step: Attaching a hanging chair to a concrete ceiling

1.  Choose location: At least 1m distance from all walls and furniture in all directions. Ensure clear space for swinging.

2.  Check ceiling type: Use a multi-detector to check for steel reinforcement and conduits. DO NOT drill into rebar!

3.  Mark drilling point: Transfer the mounting plate's attachment points to the ceiling with a pencil.

4.  Set drilling depth: Set the depth stop on the rotary hammer to anchor length + 10 mm (e.g., M10 anchor 75 mm = 85 mm drilling depth).

5.  Drill with rotary hammer: Hammer drilling in concrete – NOT rotary drilling! Keep the drill perpendicular to the ceiling.

6.  Clean drill hole (CRITICAL!): Blow out dust with a bulb duster or vacuum cleaner – 3–5 times. Limestone dust reduces holding force by up to 40%!

7.  Insert anchor: Drive in the heavy-duty anchor flush with a rubber mallet (NO steel hammer) – do not tilt.

In reinforced concrete, DO NOT drill into rebar – this weakens the load-bearing capacity of the ceiling and can, in extreme cases, lead to structural damage. Use a metal detector before drilling. A sound, solid wooden beam is an excellent attachment point – often even more load-bearing than the concrete ceiling below. The crucial difference to concrete mounting: other errors are possible with wood, and pre-drilling is mandatory.

Beam load-bearing capacity check: How to check the beam

       Visual inspection: No visible cracks, no rotten spots, no discolored areas (dark spots = moisture = possible rot).

       Tap test: Tap the beam with your knuckles. A dull, hollow sound = rot inside. A bright, firm sound = healthy wood.

       Screwdriver test: Press the tip of a screwdriver into the wood surface with light pressure. If it penetrates more than 2–3 mm: wood is too soft for loading.

       Beam dimensions: Minimum cross-section for hanging chairs: 12 cm × 12 cm (for single use). Usually not a problem with solid old building beams.

       Beam age: Have old beams (over 60 years) inspected by a carpenter before loading.

 

🔧 Step-by-step: Attaching a hanging chair to a wooden beam

1.  Find beam location: For visible beams – directly visible. For clad ceilings: use a multi-detector (Bosch GMS120 or similar) or check from above via the attic.

2.  Check beam health: Tap and screwdriver test (see above). If in doubt, consult a carpenter.

3.  Mark drilling point: Center of the beam – not at the edge (otherwise the wood will split). At least 5 cm distance from the beam edge.

4.  Pre-drill (MANDATORY!): Drill a pilot hole with an 8–10 mm wood drill bit – approx. 2/3 of the planned screwing depth. WITHOUT pre-drilling, the eye screw will split the wood!

5.  Screw in eye bolt: Screw in an M10 eye bolt with wood thread – at least 60 mm screwing depth. Use a wrench for even torque.

Screw in without pre-drilling – beam splits lengthwise, anchorage immediately loses hold. Place screws at the edge of the beam – wood tears sideways under load. Load rotten or wet beams – holding force cannot be calculated, detachment possible.

🔧 Step-by-step: Assemble & secure your standing frame

1.  Check the surface: Firm, level ground – no soft grass without base plates. On grass: Use foot pads or plates.

2.  Assemble the frame: Screw together according to the manufacturer's instructions. Tighten all connecting screws to the torque specified in the manual using a torque wrench.

3.  Check for leveling: Place a spirit level on the suspension bar. Tilted stand = tipping hazard – level the ground.

📄 Tenant Rights: Wall Drilling

Drilling into walls for a wall frame constitutes structural alteration and requires the landlord's permission. Upon moving out, drill holes must be properly filled (repair filler + paint). Obtain permission in writing and document the condition before installation with photographs.

Attaching to a tree or pergola is the simplest method – and absolutely safe if executed correctly. The most common mistakes here are: too weak a branch, wrong sling, insufficient bark protection.

Tree check: Is the branch safe?

       Minimum thickness: The branch must have a diameter of at least 20 cm. Thinner branches, even if seemingly healthy, are prone to breaking under dynamic load.

       Health check: No fungal infection (white fur, wood rot), no deep cracks, no hollow sound when tapped.

       Growth check: Branch must extend from the main trunk as an independent growth branch – not a dead stump.

       Age assessment: Check fruit trees and fast-growing trees for heartwood rot after 25–30 years. When in doubt, consult a tree expert (approx. 80–150 Euros).

 

🔧 Step-by-step: Attaching to the tree

1.  Select a suitable branch: Minimum diameter 20 cm, horizontal or slightly ascending, healthy condition.

2.  Ensure tree protection: Use a special tree sling with a protective sheath (soft sling / fleece-padded sling) – prevents girdling of the bark (risk of girdling!).

3.  Attach the sling: Loop the sling twice around the branch – at least 2 turns for even load distribution. Prefer a sliding sling or Lark's Head knot.

4.  Hook in the swivel: Always use a swivel between the sling and the chair – especially important for trees, as the seat tends to swing freely.

5.  Adjust rope length: Ideal sitting height 40–50 cm above the ground. Flexibly adjustable with additional rope or chain.

6.  Load test: Gradually apply weight. Observe the branch for creaking noises – these can indicate material tension.

A tightly fitting sling without a protective sheath will cut into the bark over the years and can kill a healthy tree ('girdling'). ALWAYS use tree slings with padded protective sheaths (soft slings), and check every year whether the sling still has play or if the tree has grown around it.

Suspended plasterboard ceilings (drywall) are the most difficult special case – and the most common reason why people fail to install. The clear message upfront:

Plasterboard panels do not have sufficient inherent load-bearing capacity for dynamic loads. Even high-performance cavity anchors achieve a maximum static load of 50–80 kg in plasterboard – a fraction of the required load-bearing capacity for a hanging chair under dynamic load.

💡 The hole saw trick

With an 80–82 mm hole saw, you can cut a clean, round hole through the plasterboard. In many cases, there is a concrete ceiling behind it, into which you can then insert a heavy-duty anchor. The mounting plate is installed recessed, with the hook protruding through the hole. A suitable stainless steel decorative disc then aesthetically covers the opening. Additional costs: approx. €15–30 for hole saw and decorative disc.

Can my ceiling support a hammock chair?

Solid concrete ceilings and healthy wooden beams can easily support a hammock chair – provided you use the correct mounting hardware (heavy-duty anchors for concrete, eye bolts with pre-drilling for wood). Plasterboard and suspended ceilings are not directly suitable – use a standing frame or drill through to the concrete ceiling behind them.

What weight must the ceiling anchor hold?

The anchor must support at least twice the weight of the heaviest user. For an adult weighing 90 kg: at least 180 kg load capacity for the anchor. A correctly installed M10 heavy-duty anchor in standard concrete can withstand at least 300–400 kg of pull-out force – significantly more than needed.

Can I attach a hammock chair without drilling?

Do I really need a swivel?
