Buy a beach chair – vacation feeling for your home

Nothing evokes the best weeks of the year quite like owning your own beach chair. Whether on the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, or right in your own garden, a beach chair offers protection from wind and sun, a touch of maritime flair, and a retreat you don't have to share with anyone. Whether on Sylt, Amrum, Rügen, Usedom, in Grömitz, Timmendorfer Strand, St. Peter Ording, or Fehmarn – anyone who knows these places also knows the feeling of listening to the sound of the waves in a beach chair. With a beach chair from our selection, you can bring exactly this feeling of life directly to your patio, balcony, or garden.

The History of the Beach Chair

The beach chair is a German invention with over 140 years of tradition. In 1882, basket maker Wilhelm Bartelmann in Warnemünde built the first beach chair, originally for an elderly lady suffering from rheumatism who was looking for a sheltered seat on the beach. Just one year later, the first two-seater was created, and Bartelmann's wife Elisabeth opened the first beach chair rental service on the Baltic Sea. In the 1920s, the beach chair began its triumphant march along the German coasts; today, it has long found its home in gardens and on balconies throughout Germany, no matter how far they are from the sea.

North Sea or Baltic Sea Beach Chair – What's the Difference?

When buying a beach chair, two classic forms are distinguished:

  • Baltic Sea Beach Chair: recognizable by its curved, rounded side panels and curved canopy – the original design, named after its place of invention on the Baltic Sea coast.
  • North Sea Beach Chair: straight, angular lines – a more puristic design that many beach chair lovers prefer for its clear lines.

Both forms differ purely in appearance; comfort and function are identical with appropriate features.

Full-recliner or Half-recliner – Which Reclining Function Suits You?

Besides the form, the reclining function is the second important purchasing decision:

  • Full-recliner: The backrest can be lowered almost horizontally – ideal if you want to take a nap in the beach chair or watch the stars.
  • Half-recliner: A more upright sitting position, perfect for reading, conversations, or relaxed sunbathing.

[Note for you: Please check the exact reclining angles of your models before publishing this section – providers state different values here (e.g., 175°/165° measured from the horizontal, others measure from the vertical). It is important that the information matches your actual products.]

Materials: What makes a high-quality beach chair?

The frame (the "trestle") Our beach chairs are made from high-quality woods such as mahogany and teak – both types of wood are characterized by natural weather resistance and long lifespan, even without annual repainting.

The weave For the characteristic basket weave, we use weather-resistant polyrattan. Compared to natural weaves made of reed or rattan, polyrattan is UV-resistant, easy to care for, and significantly more durable – the colors do not fade even after years in the sun.

Fittings and castors All metal parts are made of stainless steel. The integrated castors allow you to effortlessly slide your beach chair to the desired position despite its sometimes considerable weight.

Covers Between cotton and polyester, we recommend polyester covers: they retain their color intensity even with intense sun exposure, while cotton fades over time.

Size and Weight – What You Should Know Before Buying

A standard two-person beach chair typically measures:

  • Height: approx. 160 cm
  • Width: approx.140 cm
  • Depth: approx. 80 cm
  • Weight: approx. 65 kg (larger XXL models weigh correspondingly more)

Before purchasing, be sure to measure the available space on your patio, balcony, or in your garden – also consider the additional space required when folding back the backrest. Especially on a balcony, the weight is a crucial factor that you should compare with the load-bearing capacity beforehand.

What does a beach chair cost?

The price range for beach chairs is wide and depends on size, wood type, weave, and features. Simpler models for private use start at around €799.00, while high-quality XXL versions made of mahogany or teak with full features are in the range of €1,398.00. Generally, investing in material quality means you'll enjoy your beach chair for many years – a high-quality model is still an eye-catcher even after a decade.

Care and Protective Cover

To ensure you enjoy your beach chair for as long as possible, we recommend a suitable beach chair cover that protects against rain, snow, and UV radiation when the beach chair is not in use. Covers can be removed and washed on most models. With proper care, a high-quality beach chair remains a reliable companion for many years.
